It is a great sadness to hear of the death of Rev. Dr. Jonathan R. Wilson on Saturday 12th September, due to cancer. He died while holding hands with his wife Soohwan, after she finished saying their favourite prayer together. Jonathan also leaves behind his daughter Leah, his son-in-law Jonathan, and three grandchildren: JaiMichael, Nora and Nathan who all hold him dear.Â
Jonathan spent 14 years of his formative age in Nashville, Tennessee, before he moved to Vancouver, Canada to pursue his graduate study in theology at the age of 24. Growing up in a conservative Christian home as a preacher’s son in the 50s into the 70s of the South, Mill Creek in his neighbourhood was a safe haven for him to expand his curiosity and love of nature, which was not an important issue in the church. It is through his childhood spent in the nature and quest for a God who loves what he created helped him become an advocate for God’s creation as a theologian very early on. After returning to Vancouver in 2006, Jonathan became actively involved in Brooksdale field centre of A Rocha Canada and taught courses on creation in partnership with A Rocha and Regent College.
Through Jonathan’s teaching, writing and preaching, many of his students became staff members of A Rocha in several countries, volunteers and donors. He also helped establishing partnership between his alma mater Duke University and A Rocha USA, and creating an online course on creation care and the Gospel for European Baptist Churches. Besides the many things he did to bring the love of creation back to the church and theological institutions, Jonathan used to say his proudest contribution to A Rocha was roping his wife, Soohwan, into this wonderful organization where she served as the Chair of Trustees for A Rocha International for several years.
Ed Walker, Executive Director of A Rocha International:
Jonathan was a father figure to many in A Rocha and the creation care movement. He was a friend to many of us, learned and wise but humble and personable – he could light up a room with his energetic intellect whilst making you feel like the centre of his attention. He will be greatly missed.
Peter Harris, Co-founder & President Emeritus A Rocha:
From my first meeting with Jonathan in the late 1990’s I was aware that here was something special. He was that fine combination of a deeply erudite scholar and a person who was committed to understanding what difference his learning could make to the world beyond the academy. His contribution to A Rocha was immeasurable, both in shaping our thinking with his teaching and writing, but also in encouraging many of us personally and in praying. When Soohwan joined, and then led, the board of international Trustees we gained bonus time from Jonathan too – his energy in travelling meant a great deal to so many of us and we took full advantage of his gifted teaching and counsel. He will be greatly missed and the A Rocha family grieves with Soohwan and the family. But I can hear Jonathan’s often humorous voice saying ‘ But not as those without hope…’
